04 Applications in depth

Where these machines earn their keep.

02

Refinery turnarounds and hazardous-zone work

In Zone 1 / Zone 2 areas, electrical tools are restricted to ATEX or IECEx certified equipment — pneumatic removes the electric ignition source entirely. On a typical TAR shift this is the difference between starting at 06:00 and waiting on hot-work permits at 11:00.

Air-driven does not equal "automatically safe" — gas tests, hose routing, exhaust direction still matter. See pneumatic machining in oil & gas safety for the full hazardous-zone protocol.

03

Shipyard hull and structural fabrication

Shipyards run on air. Long compressed-air manifolds reach every work bay; electric power is restricted, especially in tank interiors and double-bottom spaces. Pneumatic tools simply work where electric cannot.

The pneumatic shop tools range covers the bulk of yard work — drills, grinders, riveters, cleaners. For weld prep and finishing see the related plate beveling and weld seam removal categories.

04

Heavy-machinery assembly and oilfield service

Heavy-equipment assembly lines, oilfield service rigs, and mine maintenance workshops all share the same constraint: tools must run on whatever the site supplies, and that is almost always compressed air. Pneumatic tools also handle the duty cycle — they do not heat up under stalled load the way electric motors do.

Bring the area classification (if applicable), typical fasteners and air supply spec to the quote form, or pair with the pipe beveling range if the work mix includes pipe prep.

05 Frequently asked

Quick answers.

When does pneumatic beat electric in real shop conditions?
In Zone 1 / Zone 2 hazardous areas (no electrical ignition source), in tank interiors and double-bottom spaces (no electric power reaches there), and in factories with reliable compressed-air infrastructure already in place. For non-hazardous shop work electric is usually the better choice — cleaner torque control, less noise, no oil mist. Full case in pneumatic machining in oil & gas safety.
Are the tools ATEX / IECEx certified for Zone 1?
Tool certification matches the area class — confirm the rating against your specific zone. "Spark resistant" alone is not the same as ATEX Zone 1. Send the area classification with the inquiry and we will quote the matching certified models.
What air supply spec do the tools need?
Typical operating pressure is 6 to 7 bar at the tool inlet (not at the compressor — pressure drops across long hoses can starve the motor). Air must be filtered for water, oil and particles; wet air rusts the tool internals, dirty air wears them.
Do pneumatic tools eliminate hot-work permits entirely?
The tool itself does, when paired with cold cutting. A pneumatic tool plus a grinder still produces sparks. Pneumatic drive removes the electrical ignition source; cold cutting removes the spark source. Both together = permit-free in Zone 1.
What's in the standard shipyard pneumatic kit?
The pneumatic shop tools range covers drills, grinders, riveters and cleaners — the bulk of yard work. The BQ pneumatic impact tools handle fastening; the CZ pneumatic chipping hammer handles slag and scale removal.
How long do pneumatic tools last in heavy duty?
Pneumatic motors do not heat up on stalled load the way electric motors do, which means the duty cycle is essentially unlimited at proper air supply. Wear parts (vanes, seals) are scheduled maintenance items — we stock spares for the life of the unit in Shenzhen, including frames built before 2015.
