SKF-150L Capless Portable Edge Miller

Portable cold edge miller that crawls along the workpiece edge instead of clamping into a fixed frame. Bevels pipe Ø > 114 mm — without an upper size limit — and flat plate from the same machine. 35 kg single-operator unit for field maintenance, large-diameter pipeline and tank fabrication.

02 Working Principle

How a capless edge miller works

Conventional pipe bevelers — chuck-type, cam-lock, internal-expansion or split-frame — all clamp into a fixed frame whose body diameter dictates the maximum pipe OD they can grip. That ceiling is typically 1 – 2 m. The SKF-150L uses a different architecture: a clamp jaw grips the workpiece edge itself (pipe wall or plate edge), and the cutting head crawls along that edge under operator guidance. Because the machine never encloses the pipe, there is no upper size limit — it works as readily on a Ø 3 m storage-tank shell as on a Ø 200 mm process line, and equally on flat plate. Cold milling with CNC carbide inserts delivers a Ra 3.2 – 6.3 μm finish without HAZ.

03 Key Features

Built for the job site.

// 01
Unlimited pipe diameter — above 114 mm ID
No fixed frame, so no upper size limit. The standard tool for large-bore transmission pipeline, storage-tank shell, and pressure-vessel fabrication where chuck-type machines cannot fit.
// 02
Pipe and plate from one machine
Same clamp and cutting head handle curved and straight edges. Replaces the need for separate pipe beveler + plate edge miller in the field kit.
// 03
35 kg — single-operator portable
Lightweight enough for high-altitude tank work, scaffolded pipeline jobs and confined-space access where heavier machines cannot be carried up.
// 04
CNC-grade carbide tooling
Replaceable carbide inserts deliver Ra 3.2 – 6.3 μm surface finish — directly weld-ready, no secondary grinding or filing required.
// 05
Cold cutting — no HAZ
Pure mechanical milling at moderate spindle speed (2000 rpm). Parent metallurgy preserved on carbon, stainless and alloy plate / pipe.
// 06
Three preset bevel angles
30°, 37.5° and 45° preset stops cover the common single-side and X-bevel standards per ASME B16.25 and EN ISO 9692-1.
06 FAQ

Common questions about the SKF-150L · Capless.

Can't find your answer?

When do I pick SKF-150L over a chuck-type (SOC) or split-frame (OC)?
When pipe diameter exceeds the upper limit of clamped machines — typically Ø > 1 m for chuck-type, Ø > 1.8 m for split-frame — or when you need one machine that handles both pipe and plate. SKF-150L's tradeoff is that it requires operator guidance along the edge; clamped machines are semi-automatic once installed. For high-volume repeat work on standard sizes, a chuck-type SOC is faster per joint.
Can it bevel inside a pipe or only outside?
Outside / OD edge only. The clamp grips the pipe wall, with the cutting head working the OD edge. For ID-mounted prep, use the internal-expansion ISE / ISP series instead.
What's the surface finish like?
Ra 3.2 – 6.3 μm with CNC carbide inserts — directly weld-ready. No secondary grinding or wire-brushing required to meet ASME B31 weld-prep surface requirements.
Is there a smaller pipe limit?
Yes — the clamp jaw geometry requires a minimum pipe ID of 114 mm (≈ 4.5"). Below that, use the cam-type (SCB / SCP) or ISC external-clamping bevelers, which are sized for small-bore work.
