DMM-YG Series ASME B16.25 ASME Section VIII EN ISO 9692-1

DMM-YG Large-Diameter Pipe & Vessel Edge Miller

Self-propelled edge miller that travels around the circumference of large-diameter pipe and pressure-vessel shells (OD > 600 mm). Specialized clamping system tracks curved surfaces while the cutter prepares longitudinal or circumferential weld seams up to 100 mm wall. Cold milling, Ra 3.2 – 6.3 μm directly off the tool.

02 Working Principle

How a curved-surface tracking miller works

Large pressure vessels, storage tanks and wind-tower sections cannot be rotated like a workpiece on a lathe — they're too heavy to spin and typically supported on cradles or pads. The work must come to the cutter. The DMM-YG addresses this with a clamp-and-travel architecture: a magnetic or chain-and-pad clamping system grips the curved shell surface, and the cutter assembly walks itself around the circumference on a tracked carriage. The milling head pivots inward or outward to address either inside-bore or outside-OD bevels — required when the weld geometry calls for compound prep on heavy wall (typical of nuclear and HP-steam vessel construction). Cold milling on carbide inserts delivers production-machine surface quality on workpieces that cannot be moved.

03 Key Features

Built for the job site.

// 01
Travels on curved surfaces — vessels & large pipe
Specialized clamping tracks pipe and vessel surfaces above 600 mm OD. The standard tool for circumferential weld prep on storage tanks, wind-tower sections, large transmission pipe and pressure-vessel shells where the workpiece cannot be rotated.
// 02
Inside + outside bevel capability
Milling head pivots to address either the OD (external bevel) or ID (internal bevel) of the workpiece. Required for compound prep (U/J) on heavy wall where weld geometry needs both sides.
// 03
100 mm wall on DMM-YG-80
Heaviest wall capacity in our portable plate-beveler line. The standard tool for thick-wall nuclear, HP-steam and pressure-vessel shell preparation where wall exceeds the range of stationary machines.
// 04
6000 W on YG-80 for deep bevel
6 kW spindle drives 65 mm bevel width in a single pass on heavy-wall stainless and Cr-Mo. Replaces three to four passes a smaller machine would need on equivalent geometry.
// 05
Cold milling — preserves Cr-Mo, P91, stainless
Pure mechanical cutting at moderate spindle speed. Parent metallurgy unchanged on stainless, Cr-Mo (P11, P22, P91), duplex and Inconel alloys used in nuclear and power-plant vessel work.
// 06
310 – 330 kg portable to site
Light enough for transport to vessel-fabrication sites and shipyard module yards. Stays at the workpiece rather than requiring the workpiece to come to a fixed shop machine.
06 FAQ

Common questions about the DMM-YG Series.

Can't find your answer?

How is this different from the split-frame clamshell beveler?
Split-frame (OC series) is a portable pipe cutter and beveler that mounts around pipe up to 1230 mm OD — opens, wraps, and clamps to a single pipe. DMM-YG is sized for vessels and large structures above 600 mm OD where the workpiece is too heavy to rotate and the bevel needs heavy-wall compound prep (up to 100 mm wall, 65 mm bevel width). Split-frame is for cutting and bevel; DMM-YG is for bevel only, on larger and thicker workpieces.
When do I need this over SKF-150L capless?
SKF-150L is a lightweight (35 kg) capless edge miller with no upper diameter limit but limited to 20 mm bevel width and 25 mm clamp thickness. DMM-YG is heavier-duty (310-330 kg) and handles wall up to 100 mm and bevel up to 65 mm — the right tool when wall thickness and bevel depth exceed SKF-150L's range. For thin-wall storage tanks use SKF-150L; for heavy-wall vessels use DMM-YG.
Inside-bore beveling — how does it work on a closed vessel?
The vessel must have an access opening (manway, head opening, or end-flange removal) large enough to admit the machine — typically 600 mm minimum. Once inside, the magnetic clamp grips the inside shell surface, and the cutter pivots inward to address the ID weld prep. Standard tool for nozzle-stub-out internal bevels and shell-to-head ID weld prep.
Magnetic vs chain clamping — when to use which?
Magnetic clamping on carbon and ferritic steel workpieces — fast setup, no surface marks. Chain-and-pad clamping on stainless and non-magnetic alloys — slower setup but works on any material. Specify shell material at quotation; we will supply the appropriate clamping option.
