02 Working Principle

Why handheld cold milling solves what stationary machines can't

Stationary edge millers (DZ benchtop, DMM tabletop, DMM hydraulic), self-propelled travelers (GL, DMM-900) and rolling-shear bevelers (KBM) all assume the work is a straight plate edge accessible from a flat datum. The moment the geometry deviates — an inner-bore hole that needs a bevel for nozzle welding, a curved shell-plate edge, a one-off pipe end on an installed structure — those machines cannot reach. The HDL solves this by inverting the workflow: the operator carries the machine and walks it along the bevel path under hand control. A 4-insert carbide cutter delivers the same cold-milling surface quality as stationary machines (Ra 3.2 – 6.3 μm), with no HAZ. Bevel uniformity is operator-dependent — but trained operators consistently match production-machine surface quality on irregular geometry where alternatives simply don't exist.

03 Key Features

Built for the job site.

// 01
Reaches what stationary machines cannot
Inner-bore holes, curved plate edges, nozzle stub-outs, vessel manway edges, pipe ends on installed structures. The standard tool for the prep work that defies fixed-machine geometry.
// 02
4-insert carbide cutter — production-grade surface
Same carbide-insert architecture as the stationary machines. Ra 3.2 – 6.3 μm surface finish — directly weld-ready without secondary grinding. Insert life on carbon steel typically 100 – 200 m per insert under handheld duty.
// 03
HDL-15A — 20° – 60° adjustable angle
Tool head angle adjusts continuously through the standard V (30° – 37.5°), Y (≥ 45°) and J-prep (40° – 50°) range. One machine covers all common weld-prep geometries.
// 04
Cold milling — no HAZ on alloy
Mechanical cutting preserves parent metallurgy. Acceptable for stainless, Cr-Mo, aluminum and alloy plate work where torch or grinder workflow disqualifies the bevel for code welding.
// 05
6 – 9 kg — single-operator continuous use
Sized for fatigue-free 4 – 6 hour shifts. HDL-10A (6 kg) for lighter overhead and high-position work; HDL-15A (9 kg) for floor work where 2450 W of cutting power earns the weight.
// 06
220 – 240 V single-phase
Plug into any shop or site outlet. Required for the irregular-geometry work that this machine targets — usually a fab-line corner or a job site where 380 V three-phase isn't available.
06 FAQ

Common questions about the HDL Series · Handheld.

Can't find your answer?

HDL-10A or HDL-15A — which should I order?
HDL-10A (6 kg, 1800 W, bevel to 10 mm) for general handheld prep work — overhead positions, lighter material, day-to-day fabrication. HDL-15A (9 kg, 2450 W, bevel to 15 mm, full 20° – 60° angle range) when you regularly bevel stainless or thicker plate, or when J-prep and steep angles are part of the work mix. The weight premium pays back through faster material removal and broader angle range.
How is this different from the SKF-15 hand-propelled plate beveler?
Mechanism. HDL is truly handheld — operator carries the machine through space to reach irregular edges. SKF-15 is hand-propelled — machine rides on wheels along a flat plate edge, operator pushes the handle. SKF-15 is for straight plate edges on a flat datum; HDL is for everything else (inner holes, curves, overhead work). Many shops own both.
Does it work on pipe ends?
Yes — handheld cutter wraps around the pipe OD. For one-off pipe ends or pipes installed in a manifold where a clamping beveler can't mount, HDL is the standard solution. For high-volume free-end pipe work, the SCB/SCP cam-lock or SOC chuck-type bevelers are faster.
Surface finish vs stationary machines?
Same carbide insert delivers the same Ra 3.2 – 6.3 μm finish. Bevel angle uniformity is operator-dependent — trained operators hold ±0.5° on long passes; novice operators may drift to ±1°. Use a template or guide bar for tight tolerances.
