Planetary Orbital Pipe Saw (Cold Cut, High-Purity)

Orbital cold pipe saw with a blade that planet-gears around the workpiece — delivering a perpendicular cut (squareness < 0.25 mm) suitable for direct hand-off to an orbital welding head. Sized for high-purity 316L tubing in semiconductor, pharmaceutical and food-grade installations.

02 Working Principle

How a planetary orbital saw cuts pipe square

The saw blade is mounted in a planet-gear carrier that revolves around the pipe axis while spinning on its own spindle. Because the blade orbits the pipe in a perfect circle, the cut surface is perpendicular to the pipe axis by construction — squareness measured under 0.25 mm without manual indication. A 4-jaw concentric clamp holds thin-walled stainless tubing without crushing or distortion (the failure mode of band saws and abrasive cutters on 316L sanitary tube). Cold-cutting with carbide tooling preserves the passive chromium-oxide layer that defines stainless corrosion resistance — a prerequisite for orbital welding without re-passivation.

03 Key Features

Built for the job site.

// 01
Orbital cut — squareness < 0.25 mm
The cut surface drops directly into an orbital welding head without secondary facing or squaring. Standard tool in high-purity weld workflows where every joint must come off the saw weld-ready.
// 02
4-jaw concentric clamping
Multi-point clamping distributes grip force evenly around the pipe OD — holds thin-walled (0.5 mm) 316L tube without ovalization or witness marks. The failure mode of bench-saw and pipe-wrench setups.
// 03
Cold cutting — preserves passive layer
No heat input means no chromium depletion at the cut surface. Stainless retains its corrosion resistance without re-passivation — the prerequisite for sanitary and high-purity service.
// 04
Particle-free cut surface
Carbide blade with controlled chip evacuation produces a cut that meets cleanroom particle-count limits. No abrasive grit embedded in the surface (the failure mode of abrasive cutoff wheels).
// 05
Flex or Metabo motor variants
Flex variant for heavier wall (up to 8 mm) and higher duty cycle. Metabo variant uses the standard Metabo angle-grinder motor — global spares network, lower acquisition cost.
// 06
Fast diameter adjustment
Clamp setting adjusts in seconds across the model's working range. Important on fab runs that move between tube sizes (e.g. mixed 1/2", 3/4" and 1" sanitary lines).
06 FAQ

Common questions about the Flex · Metabo Series.

Can't find your answer?

How is this different from an abrasive cutoff wheel or band saw?
An abrasive wheel embeds grit in the cut surface and creates a thermally affected edge that depletes chromium on stainless — both incompatible with sanitary service. A band saw produces an out-of-square cut that needs secondary facing before orbital welding. The planetary orbital saw addresses both — particle-free cold cut at squareness < 0.25 mm in one operation.
Flex or Metabo — which variant should I choose?
Choose Flex when wall thickness exceeds 4 mm — Flex variants handle up to 7 – 8 mm. Choose Metabo for thin-wall (≤ 4 mm) sanitary and gas tubing where the Metabo motor's wider spares network reduces field-maintenance cost. Both share the same orbital cutting head and clamping system.
Can the cut surface go directly to an orbital welder?
Yes — that is the design intent. Squareness < 0.25 mm and a cold-cut surface meet the fit-up tolerance of all major orbital welding heads (Polysoude, Arc Machines, Magnatech) without further facing.
Does it work on carbon steel as well as stainless?
Yes — same blade and clamping work on carbon, stainless and alloy tube. But the machine's design intent is high-purity stainless work; for general carbon-steel pipe cutting, split-frame (OC series) is often more economical.
