WFP / WFH / WFS Series ASME B16.5 ASME B16.20 EN 1092-1

Portable Flange Facing Machine (ID-Mounted, On-Site)

ID-mounted portable flange facer that resurfaces damaged sealing faces in situ — without removing the flange from the pipe. Cuts RF spiral serration, FF flat finish and RTJ grooves per ASME B16.5. Pneumatic, hydraulic or CNC servo drive across 5 size frames Ø 50 – 3000 mm.

02 Working Principle

How an ID-mounted portable flange facer works

An expanding mandrel passes into the pipe bore behind the flange and grips the ID — referencing the machine axis to the bore centerline. A rotating tool arm carries a radial slide and tool post out across the flange face. Because mounting is referenced to the pipe ID (not the flange OD or the bolt circle), the resurfaced face is automatically square to the pipe axis — which is what the gasket seats against under bolt-up load. The 360° swivel tool post lets the operator cut RF spiral serration, FF flat finish or RTJ groove geometry per ASME B16.5 / B16.20 without removing the flange from the line. Preloaded braking on the radial slide eliminates chatter when the tool crosses bolt holes — the typical failure mode of less-rigid facers.

03 Key Features

Built for the job site.

// 01
ID mounting — face square to the pipe axis
Grips the pipe bore, not the flange OD or bolt circle. The resurfaced face is concentric and square to the seal axis under bolt-up load. The standard reference for code-compliant flange repair.
// 02
RF · FF · RTJ from one tool post
360° swivel tool post cuts spiral serration on Raised Face, smooth finish on Flat Face, and machined groove for Ring Type Joint per ASME B16.20. No tool change for profile switch.
// 03
Preloaded braking — chatter-free interrupted cut
Critical on flange faces that have bolt holes — every revolution the tool crosses six to twelve voids. Preload on the radial feed slide prevents the tool from chattering or "grabbing" at hole edges.
// 04
Drive selection by site & duty
WFP pneumatic for refinery and offshore hazardous areas. WFH hydraulic for heavy-duty heavy-wall flange work (≥ 1.5 m). WFS CNC servo for repeatable production resurfacing on large vessel and turbine joints.
// 05
5 sizes covering 50 – 3000 mm
From small-bore valve flange (2") to vessel manway and turbine casing flange (10 ft). One architecture, modular mandrels and tool arms across the range.
// 06
Restores ASME B16.5 sealing geometry
Spiral serration finish 32 – 63 Ra μin per ASME B16.5 §6.4.5. RTJ groove dimensions per ASME B16.20. Resurfaced face passes the same gasket-seating tests as a new flange.
06 FAQ

Common questions about the WFP / WFH / WFS Series.

Can't find your answer?

When is on-site facing better than removing the flange to a workshop?
Almost always, for installed pipework. Removing a welded flange requires cutting and re-welding the joint — destroying the same surface you were trying to restore. On-site facing keeps the flange in place, references the cut to the pipe bore (which is the real seal axis), and is typically a 4-hour job versus a multi-day cut-and-reweld cycle.
How do I pick between WFP, WFH and WFS?
WFP (pneumatic) for hazardous-area work and small-to-medium flanges up to ~1 m. WFH (hydraulic) when wall thickness or material grade demands higher cutting torque — typical ≥ 1.5 m flanges. WFS (CNC servo) for repeatable production resurfacing where the cut profile must be identical across many flanges (e.g. a turbine overhaul with 20+ casing joints).
Can it cut a fresh RTJ groove or only restore existing ones?
Both. The 360° swivel tool post, with the correct insert, cuts a new RTJ groove to ASME B16.20 dimensions (R, RX or BX profile) on a flange previously machined as RF or FF — converting flange seal type without replacing the flange.
What surface finish does it deliver on an RF face?
Spiral serration at 32 – 63 Ra μin (≈ 0.8 – 1.6 μm) per ASME B16.5 §6.4.5. Pitch and depth match standard new-flange specification, so soft-spiral and CG gaskets seat against the resurfaced face exactly as on a new flange.
